What is S1000D?

S1000D is an international specification for the production and management of technical publications, using modular, reusable XML data modules stored in a Common Source Database (CSDB).

What is the S1000D specification?

S1000D is an international specification for technical publications, developed collaboratively by aerospace, defense, and industrial stakeholders. Rather than authoring documents as whole books, S1000D breaks content into modular, reusable XML data modules — each a self-contained unit of maintenance or operational information — that can be reused across publications and configurations.

How does S1000D work?

Data modules are stored and managed in a Common Source Database (CSDB), the single source of truth for a program's technical content. Business rules (captured in a BREX, or Business Rules Exchange data module) govern how content is authored, and the same source data can be published to multiple formats, including IETMs and IETPs. This modular, database-driven approach eliminates redundant data and keeps publications configuration-controlled.

What are the S1000D issues?

S1000D is revised over time in numbered issues. MDDV renders S1000D natively across all issues, including the latest Issue 6.0, alongside SGML (MIL-STD-38784), DITA, PDF, Xyvision/XPP, 3D/CATIA models, and HD video — with no conversion required.

How does MDDV support S1000D?

MDDV displays S1000D content natively in a zero-footprint browser viewer, and American Data Solutions provides S1000D authoring and conversion services. ADS is the only company in North America with a 100% on-time, on-budget S1000D conversion record, converting from SGML, PDF, Xyvision, FrameMaker, and other legacy formats.
